Summary:  Story about a friendship between two boys who are sent to a work camp at the time of the Holocaust.  One is Italian and the other is secretly Jewish.   The perspective is ususual because it looks at WWII from the Italian side.

Age Level:  mature 6th through 8th grade

bullet

Why?  Some graphic descriptions about the killings and beatings that took place in the Holocaust as well as discussion about circumcision.

Opinion:  excellent book -- plot moves quickly, characters are strongly developed, and the portrayal of the situation is direct and uninhibited.
