The main character, Allan Quatermain, is an
elephant hunter, who has been at it for about 20 years, and is an expert at the
ways of the jungle. Sir Henry Curtis is in search of his brother, who
disappeared years ago, and asks Quatermain to be his guide. They set off, and
come close to death as a result of dehydration in the desert, elephant herds,
freezing to death, and tribal wars. The plot deepens even further when they are
caught in the middle of a tribal war, and the secret identity of one of their
native companions is revealed.
