One Yellow Daffodil: A
Hanukkah Story by David A. Adler
Illustrator: Lloyd Bloom
Published by Gulliver
Books, Harcourt Brace & Company
Age level: 3rd
through 6th graders
This book speaks mildly
about the Holocaust as to show the pain that it had on one particular
survivor, Morris. The effect of the Holocaust on Morris’s life caused him
to stop practicing the Jewish holidays and rituals that he once had done as
a child. A Jewish family befriends Morris and aids him in coping with the
past and also helps him to see the reality of the present. A very moving
story of friendship and love for one another. The illustrations are also
exceptional.
This story would best be
used as a tool to explain a bit about the Holocaust from the teacher to the
students. It is mild enough to be appropriate for school aged children, yet
deep enough to introduce the topic of the Holocaust to students.
